The company was founded in 1906 as Alberta-Smyth, renamed Smyth Solutions in 2001, and finally rebranded to "Smyyth" in early 2010.

John Metzger, the CEO and Chairman of Smyyth, first acquired the company in 1996 as a unit of Creditek, of which he was founder and CEO. When he sold his interest in the parent company in 2002, he reacquired Smyyth, now re-established as an independent company and a leader in its field.
